Refugee Literature: Alienation and the Maze of Identity in Christy Lefteri’s Novel The Beekeeper of Aleppo

Abstract

This study aims to shed light on one of the phenomena that contemporary novelists have increasingly explored in their literary works: the phenomenon of asylum. It focuses specifically on alienation and the search for identity in Christy Lefteri’s novel The Beekeeper of Aleppo, in which these experiences are vividly embodied by the characters. The novel conveys their feelings of fear, alienation, and lack of belonging, which become central concerns throughout their journeys. Lefteri deeply portrays these emotional experiences, presenting her characters as caught between loss and anxiety during their displacement and between feelings of alienation and the search for identity in refugee camps in European countries.
