The Role of Photosynthesis in Plant Growth and Ecosystem Productivity

Photosynthesis is a fundamental biological process through which plants, algae, and cyanobacteria convert light energy into chemical energy and form organic compounds from carbon dioxide and water. In plants, photosynthesis provides the carbon skeletons and energy resources required for growth, development, reproduction, and biomass accumulation. At the ecosystem level, photosynthetic organisms form the primary producers that support food webs and influence carbon and nutrient cycles. Photosynthetic carbon fixation also contributes to atmospheric regulation and ecosystem productivity. This paper examines nine major dimensions of photosynthesis, including its basic mechanisms, chloroplast function, light and carbon dioxide effects, water relations, plant growth, carbon allocation, ecosystem productivity, environmental controls, and its broader ecological significance.
