The Human Gut Microbiome and Its Role in Health

The human gut microbiome is a complex community of microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, fungi, viruses, and their genetic material, that inhabits the gastrointestinal tract. These microbial communities interact continuously with the host and contribute to digestion, nutrient metabolism, intestinal barrier function, immune regulation, and protection against invading organisms. The composition and activity of the gut microbiome are influenced by diet, age, medications, lifestyle, geography, and health status. Alterations in microbial communities have been associated with gastrointestinal, metabolic, inflammatory, and other diseases, although causal relationships remain an active area of research. This paper examines nine major aspects of the gut microbiome, including microbial diversity, metabolism, intestinal barrier function, immune interactions, diet, dysbiosis, disease associations, microbiome-based interventions, and emerging research approaches.
