Coordination in the Arabic Language: Between Rhetorical Theorization and the Modern Functional Linguistic Approach

Abstract

Coordination has been examined in both classical and modern linguistic scholarship from a variety of perspectives. A comprehensive account of the phenomenon therefore requires attention to the particular analytical perspective adopted by each tradition. This study, entitled “Coordination in Arabic: A Comparative Study of Classical Rhetoric and Functional Grammar,” compares two traditions of linguistic inquiry: the classical Arabic linguistic tradition, with particular emphasis on rhetoric, and modern linguistic scholarship as represented by Functional Grammar theory. It focuses on the principal points of convergence and divergence between the two traditions to provide a more comprehensive account of coordination and contribute to a clearer understanding of the phenomenon in Arabic.
